Riots and injuries after cup exit in Büderich, according to police

Wuppertaler SV lost their Lower Rhine Cup quarterfinal against FC Büderich at the last second. Then the situation escalated.

FC Büderich sensationally knocked Wuppertaler SV out of the Lower Rhine Cup. However, following the Oberliga team’s 1-0 victory over the Regionalliga team, scenes ensued that no one wants to see on a soccer field. It was the 95th minute when Jannik Schulte caused everyone supporting FC Büderich to lose their minds. Contrary to the run of play, he put the Oberliga team 1-0 ahead and ultimately into the Lower Rhine Cup semi-finals. Some WSV fans then clearly vented their frustration from the past few weeks.

The police described the following events in a statement: “Shortly before the end, FC Büderich scored the goal to make it 1-0. Around 40 Wuppertal fans then stormed the pitch and threw metal bars and seat shells around. The immediate and decisive intervention of the police prevented the troublemakers from attacking bystanders. As the troublemakers continued to throw metal bars and other metal objects at the police, batons and pepper spray were used and reinforcements were requested from neighboring authorities.”

The police subsequently detained the Wuppertal supporters. “The troublemakers were temporarily detained by the police for identification purposes in order to initiate appropriate criminal proceedings. No police officers were injured in the process. Six troublemakers suffered minor eye irritation from the use of pepper spray and were given first aid by emergency services.

After the police measures were completed, the troublemakers were taken back to Wuppertal by bus. Criminal proceedings for breach of the peace were initiated. The criminal investigation department has taken over the investigation.”

The Büderich team will find out who their semi-final opponents are next Wednesday (November 19, 7:30 p.m.). This will be determined at 7:30 p.m. between SC St. Tönis and VfB Hilden. In the Regionalliga West, Wuppertaler SV has a home game against Fortuna Düsseldorf II on Saturday (November 22, 2 p.m.). Büderich will host 1. FC Kleve in the Oberliga Niederrhein on Friday evening (8 p.m.).
