The second round of the Westfalen Cup has produced its first big surprise. SV Rödinghausen just can’t seem to get going this season.
SV Rödinghausen has already made a false start in the Regionalliga West. Now, the poor start to the season – only one win from the first six games – has been compounded by an embarrassing defeat in the Westphalia Cup.
Things did not go well for the favorites from the start against Westphalia League club RW Maaslingen. The underdogs, who play two divisions lower, took an early 2-0 lead with goals from Jan-Malte Schwier and Kadir Yildirim. Maaslingen took advantage of their chances, while Rödinghausen was very sloppy in front of goal. But by halftime, SVR was back in the game. A double strike shortly before half-time by Eduard Probst and Simon Breuer equalized the 2-0 score.
There were no further goals after the break, although Rödinghausen could have scored the 3-2 winner deep into injury time. As there is no extra time in the Westphalia Cup, the game went straight to penalties.
The first nine shooters were all successful. Then Viktor Miftaraj stepped up and missed. Rödinghausen was out, and the Westphalia League team could celebrate.
