Rot-Weiß Oberhausen is founding a women’s division. It has not yet been decided where the first team will start. Even the regional league is possible.
FC Schalke 04, Borussia Dortmund or VfL Bochum have already founded women’s soccer departments. A few days ago, ETB SW Essen, second in the Oberliga Niederrhein, also announced that it would be sending women’s teams to the starting line in the future.
And now Rot-Weiß Oberhausen from the Regionalliga West has also decided to take this step. RWO is founding a department for women’s and girls’ soccer for the 2023/2024 season. Kickoff for match operations will be July 1, 2023.
“This is a historic step for our RWO and its further development. For many years, there were always talks and plans. Then, just over a year ago, we had firmly set our sights on the foundation and started the preparations. Today we can say that things will get underway this summer. We are all very proud of that,” said RWO Chairman Hajo Sommers.
The new department will enter league play for the 2023/2024 season. The plan is to build several teams. In addition to junior teams, a 1st women’s team will also be established.
The background: RWO has entered into a cooperation agreement with SV Adler Osterfeld, through which RWO will assume the playing rights for the first women’s team. The presidium of the Lower Rhine Football Association has already approved this takeover.
The first women’s team of Osterfeld is currently active in the district league. There the team is on the 2nd table place. Two points behind FC Kray, yet the team, which can boast a goal ratio of 118:13, still has a game in hand. Six games are still to come for the Adler ladies. If they were to win promotion, RWO would even be able to compete in the Landesliga.
Speaking of the Landesliga, BVB’s 1st team, which has been promoted to the Landesliga, will also play there next season. Schalke is also on the verge of making the jump to the Landesliga.
RWO Team 2 challenged against direct rivals
On Sunday, April 24, RWO Team 2 will travel to SG Osterfeld. Kickoff at Wittekindstrasse is already at 13:15 (Wittekindstr. 47, 46117 Oberhausen).
The relegation battle is slowly coming to a head: For the cloverleaves, it comes to a “six-point game” on Sunday. They will be hosting SG Osterfeld, who are currently one place behind the Red-Whites on points.
With a win, RWO II can take an important step toward staying in the relegation zone in Kreisliga A and increase the gap between them and the teams at the bottom of the league. Oberhausen and SG Osterfeld – both of whom still have six games to play – are currently two points ahead of a relegation spot.
