Great joy at VfL Bochum: The second division team advanced to the round of 16 of the DFB Cup with a 1-0 win over Bundesliga team FC Augsburg.
The change of coach at VfL Bochum is having a really positive effect. Uwe Rösler pulled off a cup coup in Augsburg. A quick counterattack led to a 1-0 victory.
Gerrit Holtmann became the cup hero. The offensive player scored the goal of the evening in the 39th minute with a deflected shot. “The goal was played out at supersonic speed,” said the winger, who was named player of the match, about the rapid VfL counterattack. In the round of 16, however, Holtmann does not want “Bayern or Dortmund,” but only “a home game.” VfL now wants to cause a stir in the DFB Cup for even longer.
Holtmann added: “It was a very, very exciting cup evening. We are also very happy that we won without conceding a goal. In the cup, it’s all about winning dirty, and that’s what we did. Especially when you look at our situation – we’re through to the next round, and that’s what counts. It went back and forth. Timo Horn is in sensational form at the moment, we need him in every way. We could have decided the game early today, but we still have things to work on. The confidence with which our young players in particular performed today was impressive. It was really fun to play with the guys up front.”
Timo Horn was a strong support for Uwe Rösler’s team this time. The keeper was naturally delighted to have secured a place in the round of 16.
“Keeping a clean sheet tonight was special. We haven’t done that in a long time. I think we played a very, very good game for long periods. We shouldn’t have made it so exciting at the end. I would have preferred it if Momo had converted the chance. But in a moment like that, a thousand thoughts go through your head. So it was an exciting game at the end, but apart from one or two situations, we defended everything and threw ourselves into it. It was a great away game for us, and we absolutely deserved to progress. That’s the path we have to take – developing players. We have some promising young players in our ranks.”
