The U19 of Rot-Weiss Essen had to share the points in the derby with Rot-Weiß Oberhausen after three wins in a row. Two RWE regulars were substituted early on.
After the U19s of Rot-Weiss Essen had all come off the pitch as winners in the past three league games, RWE coach Simon Hohenberg’s team did not get beyond a 0-0 draw in the derby against Rot-Weiß Oberhausen.
“From a coach’s point of view, I didn’t think it was a good game in general. There were too many technical impurities in it, especially in the passing game. I’m not exactly satisfied with our performance now either, but I do think it was a fair draw at the end,” Hohenberg commented after the game ended.
In particular, the red-and-white U19 coach saw unused potential in his own possession phases against RWO: “We had a greater share of the game and more possession. We were the team that was challenged to find solutions. Oberhausen went a lot about switching play and long balls.”
Although RWE’s U19s did not concede a goal for the first time since the first matchday (5-0 against VfL Rhede), that did not make up for the deficits against Oberhausen for Hohenberg: “We allowed a brutal number of standards against us. We defended them well, but then it also has something to do with individual class. In these areas, we have to avoid the foul plays. And we have to be more determined in the final third. I’m also critical of my team. For our claim it was too little. “
Mats is the captain of the team and an absolute leader. He trained with the pros during the week. Regardless, we judge by performance. Then I don’t find it reprehensible when a captain has to leave the pitch after 75 minutes.

With regard to the changes made by the 37-year-old during the game, two substitutions in particular stood out. First, RWE talent Yan Friessner did not return to the pitch after the halftime break. “Yan is coming off a long injury break. He hasn’t been able to train fully all week, so the load had to be controlled. There it is completely normal that we bring him on slowly,” clarified Hohenberg.
On the other hand, captain Mats Brune was substituted after 75 minutes without any signs of injury. “Mats is captain of the team and an absolute leader. He trained with the professionals during the week. Regardless of that, we judge on performance. Then I don’t find it reprehensible if a captain has to leave the pitch after 75 minutes. It doesn’t mean much, I’m very relaxed about it,” said the RWE coach.
The goalless draw meant that RWE’s youngsters, who had entered the eighth matchday at the top of the table, missed out on scoring points. The direct pursuers TSV Meerbusch and SpVg Schönnebeck, who each play tomorrow (Sunday, 28.10.), could move ahead with victories. “I do not care much at this stage. After the first round, when everyone has played against everyone, then you have a clear table picture,” stressed Hohenberg.
