After the surprises on Tuesday, the 2nd round of the Niederrheinpokal also saw some spectacular action on Wednesday.
Two of the first four games of the 2nd round of the Niederrheinpokal found a surprising winner on Tuesday evening. The Landesliga team 1. FC Monheim defeated the Oberliga team VfB Homberg in a penalty shoot-out.
District league team SW Alstaden caused a sensation with their victory over the top team of the regional league, Wuppertaler SV. On Wednesday, the eight matches were a little quieter – the favourites prevailed.
The first game was played by third division team Rot-Weiss Essen, who won 5:0 against top division team St. Tönis. Ratingen 04/19 did it even better, winning 10:0 at SV Lürrip, a team from the A-county league.
SF Baumberg also played it cool. Unbeaten in the Oberliga Niederrhein, they also showed at Landesliga team FSV Duisburg that they are currently in really good form. They gave FSV no chance in their 4:0 victory. A curious fact: The floodlights in Duisburg were out for a short time, so the game had to be interrupted for a short time.
The other matches were closer, but the difference between the leagues was not as clear as in the Ratingen match. With one exception: Union Nettetal, a team from the top division, played at Krefeld-Fischeln, a team from the district league.
And the game developed into a real spectacle. The favourite squandered a 2:0 lead, a 3:1 and a 4:2. After 90 minutes the score was 4:4. It went into extra time. There, too, the underdogs held their own, no further goals were scored, so it came down to the final penalty shoot-out.
And here eleven more goals were scored. Krefeld-Fischeln missed one penalty, the favourites from Nettetal two in the end. The hosts’ great fight was rewarded with a 10:9 victory. After Alstaden, a second district league team has reached the last 16. Respect.
Fewer goals were scored in the other matches. Here, the regional league team 1. FC Bocholt won 2:0 against the upper league team SV Sonsbeck. ETB SW Essen won their Oberliga duel at 1. FC Kleve 1:0, in the other Oberliga duel between Hamborn 07 and VfB Hilden the Hamborn “Lions” also won 1:0 and Oberliga team SV Straelen won 3:0 at Landesliga team TuRU Düsseldorf thanks to a brace by Dacain Baraza and a goal by Dario Bezerra-Ehret.
