RWE fans celebrate at field hockey game: “That was quite curious”.

Rot-Weiss Essen won 2:1 at Borussia Dortmund II on Friday. Some fans celebrated afterwards at the ice hockey regional league team Eisadler Dortmund.

Around 10,000 fans of Rot-Weiss Essen celebrated the 2-1 win at Borussia Dortmund’s U23 on Friday evening. In doing so, RWE set an away record for the season in the 3rd division and helped BVB to a new spectator record for a home game of the second team with a total attendance of over 17,000.

But that wasn’t all: Following the third league match, Essen supporters also provided a good atmosphere at a game of the ice hockey regional league team Eisadler Dortmund. Numerous Red-and-Whites decided to make a spontaneous detour to the nearby Ice Sports Center Westfalen and continued to celebrate exuberantly.

“That was very curious,” said Eisadler press spokesman Thorsten Braun, himself an RWE sympathizer, looking back on last Friday evening.

Normally, home games of the Eisadler are not allowed to overlap with games at Signal-Iduna-Park. This is only possible in the rare cases when Dortmund’s U23 team plays at the professional stadium. In this respect, the fourth-division club is not used to the support of soccer fans.

Brown: “We had the faint hope that a few would stop by after the soccer. But we were completely surprised by this extent, because the Esseners had not announced themselves. It was a successful evening for all involved.”

More than 150 Esseners mingled with the total of more than 500 spectators. “They were of course euphoric about their own victory and created a good atmosphere, ordered drinks and sang for our team,” Braun is pleased to say. When the RWE anthem “Opa Luscheskowski” boomed from the loudspeakers in the ice rink during a break in the game, the atmosphere reached its peak.

In addition, the Esseners had plenty of goals to cheer, the Eisadler won the season opener of the Regionalliga West with 13:3 against EC Bergisch Land. Possibly the unexpected support from Essen also contributed to this overwhelming victory.
