RWE makes comeback at the city championship

For a long time, Rot-Weiss Essen was missing from the list of participants at the Essen Indoor City Championship. This will change at the upcoming event.

The winter break is getting closer – and with it the indoor season. In Essen, the city championship begins on the first weekend in January, with the group draw taking place this Wednesday (7 p.m.). For the first time in over ten years, Rot-Weiss Essen is in the draw.

After a long absence, RWE has decided to enter the tournament with the second team from the Kreisliga B. “As the highest-ranking club, it’s also about sending a signal, even if we come with our reserves,” explains RWE-II coach Stefan Lorenz. “I think it’s great and I’m really looking forward to the hall.”

The fact that the abstinence of the red-and-whites has not been well received everywhere in recent years has not escaped the notice of the Bergeborbeckers. That’s why they decided back in the summer to compete in the district league. A plan that the board around CEO Marcus Uhlig supports, says Lorenz.

The spectator interest in the already popular tournament is likely to grow even more with the participation of RWE. At least the 3rd division is still resting on the first two weekends, which is why Lorenz would be happy if one or two fans supported the second team in the hall.

Many players and officials of the other participants are RWE supporters,” he also knows, ”although many amateur teams see us as the second team and are likely to be particularly motivated in games against us.”

A glance at the table shows that the team from Essen is no ordinary B-league team and has significantly more resources than its competitors: the Lorenz team leads Group 1 after 13 games without losing a point and with a goal difference of 105:11. The second half of the season will show whether this year’s performance is enough to get them promoted as in previous years.

RWE II: Optimally, they will be in the final round

That is the clear goal for the regular season, while they go “humble” into the hall. “We want to represent the club colors as well as possible and get as far as we can – ideally, we want to still be in the running on the last weekend.”

Lorenz has not yet revealed which players will be competing for RWE and whether the two top strikers Emre Kilic (34 goals) and Dominik Milaszewski (28) will be there. That will be decided after the draw and the last league games of the year.

What is clear, however, for the former professional, who once celebrated the Vice-Hallenstadtmeisterschaft as coach of TuS Essen-West 81: “I’m really looking forward to the hall.”
