RWE pick up a point away from home for the first time after falling behind

Rot-Weiss Essen have broken a negative streak at Arminia Bielefeld. For the first time this season, RWE scored after falling behind.

Traditional duel on the Alm. Arminia Bielefeld faced Rot-Weiss Essen in the 3rd division in front of a fantastic crowd. For Bielefeld, it was a matter of staying out of the league, while RWE could have jumped up to fifth place with a three-pointer.

In the end, the two teams drew 1:1 (1:0) – the first time RWE had scored a point away from home after falling behind. Previously, they had lost seven games after trailing seven times.

RWE coach Christoph Dabrowski fielded the team that recently defeated MSV Duisburg 4-1 in front of 23,748 spectators. The first 30 minutes went well. Although there were hardly any goalmouth scrambles, RWE were aggressive and won over 60 percent of the tackles.

The most dangerous action came from the visitors, who played their way through Nils Kaiser and Marvin Obuz, but Obuz’s cross was cleared at the highest level.

Bielefeld then proved effective. After 32 minutes, Obuz lost a tackle in midfield, Monju Momuluh then got away from Kaiser and Leandro Putaro scored from Momuluh’s cross to make it 1:0.

It was interesting to see how Essen would react. After all, every time they have trailed away from home, they have lost – seven times already. Not this time, even if Essen appeared somewhat shocked after going 1-0 down.

RWE sporting director Christian Flüthmann emphasized on “MagentaSport” during the break: “The game is difficult to grasp. Offensively, it wasn’t a good game from us, defensively it was okay. We have our problems away from home, we have to work on that. “

After the changeover, Bielefeld wanted to go one better, RWE struggled to get going but nevertheless equalized. After Bielefeld’s Leon Schneider missed a mega chance to make it 2:0 from three meters out, Cedric Harenbrock was on hand at the other end. After a pass from Kaiser, he took off – and scored to make it 1:1, although Arminia keeper Jonas Kersken should have stopped the shot.

RWE were now in the game – and the pressure was on. First Kersken held a shot from Obuz, who shortly afterwards set off on a super solo run and was prevented at the last moment by Christopher Lannert’s sliding tackle from making it 2:1 for RWE. After the 1:1, Bielefeld were no longer able to do anything, they were obviously only out to save the 1:1 over time.

They succeeded, and RWE are now seventh. Should they win the catch-up match in Saarbrücken, RWE would be fully involved in the battle for third place. The point could also be important for Bielefeld, as the gap to the first relegation place is six points five match days before the end of the season.

Arminia continue their campaign on Friday (April 19, 7 p.m.) at SV Sandhausen. RWE must play at Waldhof Mannheim on Sunday (April 21, 1:30 p.m.)
