Rot-Weiss Essen has confidently completed its round of 16 task in the Lower Rhine Cup, winning 4-0 (2-0) at SV Straelen.
KFC Uerdingen, 1. FC Bocholt, Rot-Weiss Oberhausen, SSVg Velbert, Sportfreunde Hamborn, Sportfreunde Baumberg, Ratingen 04/19 and Rot-Weiss Essen: the quarter-final line-up for the 2023/2024 Niederrhein Cup is now set.
Defending champion Essen was the last team to book its ticket for the last eight. On Tuesday evening, RWE won 4-0 (2-0) at Oberliga club SV Straelen.
RWE played with the confidence of three consecutive wins and took the initiative, with Moussa Doumbouya getting the ball off the foot of a Straelen defender after just four minutes. Some RWE fans were already shouting for a goal.
Then, out of nowhere, the hosts: Felix Wienand played the ball into the foot of Markus Müller (10th minute) without any pressure, and he suddenly found himself in front of the Essen keeper, but Wienand was able to make up for his mistake with a brilliant save.
SV Straelen played courageously and didn’t concede many chances – until just before half-time. First, Ron Berlinski (37) capitalized on a defensive error by Straelen and then Torben Müsel (40) slotted a free-kick into the net.
After the restart, substitute Marvin Obuz set up his teammate Nils Kaiser, who made it 3-0 (47.) for RWE. That was also the early decision. Doumbouya (88.) scored the 4-0 final score in front of around 1200 fans at the Römerstraße.
Rot-Weiss Essen saved their strength and advanced to the quarter-finals of the Niederrhein Cup in commanding fashion.
