Rot-Weiss Essen’s training camp begins on Monday. Everything you need to know about the schedule and personnel.
Third-division soccer club Rot-Weiss Essen is entering the decisive phase of its preparations for the new season. In less than three weeks (Friday, August 1, 7 p.m.), things will get serious for the club from the Ruhr region when the third division season kicks off with a cracker of a game against promotion contenders 1860 Munich. “We will be challenged to the max in all areas in the first game against 1860 Munich,” said RWE coach Uwe Koschinat after Saturday’s friendly against Fortuna Cologne, which Essen won very confidently 5-0 (3-0).
On Monday, the team will head to Lower Saxony to spend the next five days preparing intensively for the first important tasks of the new season. We answer the most important questions about the RWE training camp. Rot-Weiss Essen will be in Wesendorf, a small community with around 5,900 inhabitants in Lower Saxony, from Monday to Friday (July 14 to 18, 2025). The Essen team will leave on Monday and complete their first training session in the afternoon. This will be followed by intensive days with two training sessions each. On Friday, the RWE team will travel to Magdeburg, where the local club will face ambitious second division side 1. FC Magdeburg at 2 p.m., bringing the training camp to a close. A number of RWE fans have also announced their intention to stay in nearby hotels so they can attend the Essen summer training camp.
What is the latest on the injured RWE players?
Lucas Brumme will definitely miss the training camp. The left-back will be out for around four weeks due to several torn ligaments in his ankle and will therefore remain in Essen.
Michael Kostka, Marvin Obuz, and Torben Müsel will be on the RWE bus on Monday. Right-back Kostka missed the last two friendly matches in Edinburgh and against Fortuna Cologne due to a strain, so the 21-year-old will only be able to complete part of the training in Wesendorf. Marvin Obuz (groin) and Torben Müsel (muscle problems) are looking much better. Both are expected to return to training on Tuesday if possible.
Which squad will Rot-Weiss Essen take to the training camp?
Rot-Weiss Essen’s squad currently comprises 27 contracted players, but Jimmy Kaparos and Dion Berisha have been released to look for new clubs. This means that RWE is currently planning with 25 professionals. “I think the squad size is just right now,” Koschinat said on Saturday. With Brumme out, RWE will travel to Wesendorf with 24 players (21 field players, three goalkeepers). There were no plans over the weekend to bring in U19 players to fill out the squad. However, one or two U19 players could be called up at short notice on Sunday. Will there be any further transfers in the coming week? Rot-Weiss Essen has no plans for the next few days. All key positions are covered. There will be no reinforcements at the training camp. Coach Uwe Koschinat and the sporting management will have the opportunity to take a close look at the squad over the next few days and weeks. Their impressions during the preparation phase and on the first matchdays will determine whether further transfers will be made. “It is now up to the players to show that they can meet the demands of the coaching team,” emphasized Koschinat.
