Rot-Weiß Oberhausen had struggled against SC Wiedenbrück in recent encounters, but RWO secured an important victory to stay in touch with the top of the table.
On matchday 12 of the Regionalliga West, Rot-Weiß Oberhausen faced a formidable opponent from recent years. Despite falling behind early, RWO came back this time and celebrated a deserved 3-1 home victory against SC Wiedenbrück.
Of their last eight games against SCW, the Kleeblätter had won only one, with Wiedenbrück taking all three points on five occasions. RWO fans were understandably nervous when Jan-Lukas Liehr gave the visitors an early lead at the Niederrhein Stadium (11th minute).
The home side were now wide awake and applied more pressure, with Nico Klaß missing from a promising position after a corner (28th minute), shortly after Eric Gueye had tested the visitors’ keeper Marcel Hölscher. Shortly before half-time, both Denis Donkor and Matona-Glody Ngyombo (43rd minute) missed chances to equalize. SCW thus went into the break with a fortunate lead.
And they came out of it with a dream start: Kerem Yalcin got the ball on the left edge of the box and buried it in the top right corner to make it 1-1 (46′). RWO simply kept going, with Timur Mehmet Kesim (50′) and Tarsis Bonga (51′) making it 3-1 in quick succession!
That took the wind out of the visitors’ sails, while the Red and Whites continued to press forward. However, the fourth goal did not come, giving the visitors some faint hope of a late comeback. But RWO’s defense remained solid and rarely allowed Wiedenbrück to get a shot on goal.
The score remained 3-1 to the hosts, who remain among the league leaders. Wiedenbrück remain in the relegation zone.
Rot-Weiß Oberhausen’s next Regionalliga match is on Friday evening (October 25) away to Schalke 04 II. SC Wiedenbrück welcome newly promoted Eintracht Hohkeppel to the basement battle the following day at 2 p.m.
