Rot-Weiß Oberhausen deservedly won 1-0 (0-0) against SC Paderborn’s second team on Friday evening. A penalty made the difference.
Rot-Weiß Oberhausen has won three of its last four games in the Regionalliga West. Coach Sebastian Gunkel’s team wanted to continue its clear upward trend of recent weeks on matchday 11 against SC Paderborn’s U21 team.
And they succeeded. RWO deservedly won 1-0 (0-0) at their home stadium Niederrhein on Friday evening. Luca Schlax scored the winning goal from a penalty kick (81′). That makes four wins from the last five championship games.
RWO had its first big chance after just nine minutes. Lucas Halangk played a perfect pass to Burinyuy Nyuydine in the middle, who shot directly. However, keeper Florian Pruhs was alert and blocked the shot from close range.
Both teams had good chances after that, but the teams went into the break with the score tied at 0-0. The best chance for the East Westphalians fell to Medin Kojic, who appeared in the box after a pass from Georg Ermolaev and forced RWO goalkeeper Kevin Kratzsch into a brilliant save (40′). Bennit Bröger put the rebound into the side netting.
The Kleeblätter also got off to a good start in the second half. The RWO fans were already cheering when Seok-ju Hong shot from the right side of the penalty area, but the attempt ended up in the side netting (53′). Once again, Nyuydine was the provider.
Gunkel’s team continued to press and were rewarded for their efforts in the closing stages. Ayman Aourir dribbled into the penalty area in the 80th minute and could only be stopped by a foul – penalty. Luca Schlax kept his cool, sending Pruhs the wrong way and confidently slotting home to make it 1-0 (81′). Eric Gueye could have added to the tally in the 89th minute, but his shot was saved by the Paderborn keeper. Nevertheless, it remained a narrow home win for the Kleeblätter.
Rot-Weiß Oberhausen will continue on Saturday, October 11 (2 p.m., RS live ticker), with a big game in the second round of the Lower Rhine Cup against third-division side Rot-Weiss Essen. At the same time, SC Paderborn II will be in league action against FC Gütersloh.
