The fans of Rot-Weiß Oberhausen have launched a crowdfunding campaign to go beyond the World Cup boycott they are calling for.
The World Cup in Qatar is in full swing. On Wednesday, the German national team will also start the tournament against Japan (kick-off 2 pm). Many fans from amateur to professional clubs have called for a boycott of the World Cup in recent weeks. For the supporters of Rot-Weiß Oberhausen, however, this does not go far enough.
In a letter, the RWO fan scene calls for people to take part in their protest action. “With the help of an aid organisation from Constance, which campaigns for human rights in various countries around the world, donations are being collected under a crowdfunding link,” it says.
In addition, a T-shirt with the inscription “Boycott Qatar” is available for purchase via the Facebook and Instagram page “Fancontainer Oberhausen”. The proceeds will also be credited to the crowdfunding. The aim of the campaign is to “sustainably improve the situation in a country so marked by human rights violations.”
As in other German stadiums, there had been flyers and banners in Oberhausen recently to draw attention to the situation in Qatar and to call for a boycott of the World Cup. The RWO fans denounce above all the “atrocious working conditions in the construction of football stadiums”.
