RWO gets serious in the promotion battle – Boss Uhlig: “Like squirrels”

Rot-Weiß Oberhausen is getting serious in the promotion battle and simply continues to win. Even VfL Bochum’s U21 team couldn’t stop the Kleeblätter.

Rot-Weiß Oberhausen is increasingly becoming a serious promotion candidate. After a well-deserved 1-0 victory against VfL Bochum’s U21 team, the Kleeblätter are now only three points behind the leading duo of Fortuna Cologne and FC Schalke 04 II. “We’re doing it like squirrels,” said RWO boss Marcus Uhlig after the never-threatened victory against Bochum. Once again, they have moved a step closer to the top of the table. During the week, representatives of the city and other parties involved visited the Niederrhein Stadium to discuss how to get it ready for the 3rd division as quickly as possible. This infrastructure may be needed sooner than was thought a few weeks ago. Thanks to their victory against VfL Bochum II, Oberhausen are now unbeaten in six games in the Regionalliga West, in addition to their 3-2 cup win against Rot-Weiss Essen.

As a team, we once again put in a good performance on the pitch to shape the game. We defended very well together with all the players and didn’t allow them many chances.

Sebastian Gunkel

Oberhausen coach Sebastian Gunkel praised the team after a convincing 90 minutes, which was watched by a slightly larger crowd than usual thanks to a special promotion. 2,878 spectators were in attendance, including many children under the age of 13 who were granted free admission. “As a team, we once again put in a good performance on the pitch to shape the game. We defended very well with all our players and didn’t allow them many chances,” said a delighted Gunkel. “We also did really well with the ball in the final third.”

However, Oberhausen failed to seal the deal early on. With a goal difference of plus 2, they have already earned 27 points. “But in the final third—and I have to criticize this to some extent in a game like this, when things are clearly going in one direction—you have to create clearer chances and use your determination and conviction to score more goals.”

That has been a shortcoming so far this season. We need to work on that. And then the dreams of promotion could really come true, because there is no outstanding team in the regional league so far this season.
