Rot-Weiß Oberhausen won 2–0 (1–0) against 1. FC Düren. RWO coach Sebastian Gunkel was delighted to welcome back a returning player.
Rot-Weiß Oberhausen won its last home game of the year 2-0 (1-0) against 1. FC Düren. The victory secured third place in the table for coach Sebastian Gunkel’s team.
Tarsis Bonga scored the first goal of the game in the 32nd minute with a header from a cross by Denis Donkor. Moritz Stoppelkamp scored the second goal in the 90th minute from the penalty spot after the veteran had won the penalty himself. “It’s great to have ‘Stoppel’ back. He sealed the deal with a very important move,” said Gunkel after the game.
But the coach wasn’t just happy with the performance of his returning player. Gunkel was also pleased with the performance of the other Oberhausen players. “I was very satisfied with the first half and we did very well. Even though it wasn’t always easy on this pitch, we played the ball from man to man and moved it around very well,” Gunkel summed up.
Düren, on the other hand, was too harmless in the first half. After the break, the visitors had several better phases, but ultimately it was not enough to pose a threat to RWO. “We are very happy with this victory because it was hard-earned,” said the RWO coach.
Düren coach Kristopher Fetz was unhappy with the result, but praised his team’s performance in the same breath. After three games without a win, Fetz wants to build on the performance against Oberhausen in the coming weeks and, if possible, win the next game against Eintracht Hohkeppel.
Unfortunately, we lacked the last few percent to push the ball over the line.

“We were really looking forward to this game, and with this great atmosphere and in this beautiful stadium, it was definitely a highlight of the season for us,” revealed Fetz. “We wanted to go into the game with courage, even though we tended to be weaker than our opponents in the first half. We didn’t do anything fundamentally wrong or inadequate, we just lacked that last one or two percent in the direct duels and in our conviction.”
Fetz continued: “We showed a different side in the second half. We were braver and quicker in our play. We also had better control defensively. We were able to turn the game around a bit and shift the play into Oberhausen’s half. Unfortunately, we lacked that final bit of luck to get the ball over the line.”
