Will Karel Geraerts move from Schalke to FC Brugge in the summer? S04 is apparently prepared for this scenario. Another Belgian is a candidate.
The struggling FC Schalke 04 has stabilized just in time for the final spurt of the Bundesliga 2 season. The 1:1 draw at Elversberg means that the Gelsenkirchen side have now gone four games without defeat. Only one of the last seven league games has been lost. Schalke are taking small steps towards securing their place in the league. If the team of coach Karel Geraerts remains this stable, the scrap season should at least end without disaster.
Plans for the coming second division season are already being made in the background at Berger Feld – the first player transfers are being tinkered with. But at Schalke, there is still a question mark over coach Karel Geraerts. Although the 42-year-old Belgian is still under contract until 2025, Geraerts is still the preferred candidate at first division club FC Brugge. He could take over there from the summer.
His connections to Bruges are undisputed. He played for the club as an active player and his family still lives in the Belgian city. When asked about a possible move back home, he said on Sky on Friday: “The only thing that is true is that my family lives in Bruges and I played in Bruges. Everything else is rumors and I’m not dealing with rumors at the moment.” However, he has not categorically ruled out a transfer.
Looking ahead to the final spurt in the 2nd Bundesliga, Geraerts said: “I have enough work to do at Schalke, we have a big challenge ahead of us and I will continue with that.”
Hein Vanhaezebrouck hot Schalke candidate
According to Sky reports, Schalke are already preparing for Geraerts’ possible departure. Hein Vanhaezebrouck is considered a candidate to succeed him. The 60-year-old is also Belgian and currently still coach of KAA Gent. He is said to have good contacts with S04 sports director Marc Wilmots.
