FC Schalke 04’s U19 team is through to the quarterfinals of the DFB Cup. They beat FSV Mainz 5-3 in a sensational game.
The U19 team is through to the last sixteen of the DFB Cup. And FC Schalke 04 had a tough task ahead of them against FSV Mainz 05.
But despite a shaky start, the team of coach Norbert Elgert prevailed 5:3 (4:1) and is therefore through to the quarter-finals. The game began with a shock.
After just two minutes, Daniel Imafidon scored for the guests 1:0 after a failed pass from Johannes Siebeking. But the royal blue talents just shook themselves and struck back.
Ayman Gulasi equalized for Schalke after seven minutes with a spectacular shot. Zaid Amoussou-Tchibara, who leads the scoring charts in Group 3 of the DFB Youth League with ten goals, made it 2:1 after 27 minutes.
After a counterattack, Amoussou-Tchibara ran alone towards the Mainz goal and kept his cool – the lead for Schalke. And because it was going well, Schalke scored again. After 34 minutes, Gulasi scored his second goal after strong work from Amoussou-Tchibara. The S04 rewarded itself for a strong performance after falling behind early.
And the Elgert talents wanted more and more. They missed two chances, but then the 4-1 fell before half-time – from the penalty spot. Amoussou-Tchibara, who was also fouled, converted the penalty to make it 4-1 at half-time.
The second half was a tense affair, with Mainz again getting off to the better start and reducing the deficit through Mika Preßler. However, the visitors’ hopes were soon dashed when Amoussou-Tchibara scored his third of the game to make it 5-2 on the hour mark.
But Mainz still didn’t want to give up. And so the fight was rewarded. Mika Preßler brought the FSV back into the game again – but the 3:5 brought nothing in the end, although Mainz tried everything.
