S04 in the quarterfinals – Schalke 0-1 down, then put on a fireworks display against Mainz

FC Schalke’s U19 team is through to the quarterfinals of the DFB Cup. The 5-3 win over FSV Mainz was a real spectacle.

The U19s are in the round of 16 in the DFB Cup. And FC Schalke 04 had a tough task ahead of them with FSV Mainz 05.

But despite a poor start, coach Norbert Elgert’s team came out on top 5-3 (4-1) to advance to the quarter-finals. The game started with a shock.

After just two minutes, Daniel Imafidon scored the 1-0 for the visitors after a failed pass from Johannes Siebeking. But the Royal Blue talents shook themselves off and struck back.

Ayman Gulasi equalized for Schalke after seven minutes with a spectacular shot. Zaid Amoussou-Tchibara, who leads the scoring charts in Group 3 of the DFB Youth League with ten goals, made it 2:1 after 27 minutes.

After a counterattack, Amoussou-Tchibara ran alone towards the Mainz goal and kept his cool to give Schalke the lead. And because it was going well now, Schalke scored again immediately. After 34 minutes, Gulasi scored his second goal after strong work by Amoussou-Tchibara. S04 were rewarded for a strong performance after going a goal down early on.

And the Elgert talents wanted more and more. They missed two chances, but then the 4-1 was scored before half-time – from the penalty spot. Amoussou-Tchibara, who was also fouled, converted the spot-kick to make it 4-1 at half-time.

The second half was a different story, with Mainz again getting off to the better start and reducing the deficit through Mika Preßler. However, the visitors’ hopes were short-lived, with Amoussou-Tchibara scoring his third of the game to make it 5-2 on the hour mark.

But Mainz still didn’t want to give up. And so the fight was rewarded. Mika Preßler brought the FSV back into the game again – but the 3:5 brought nothing in the end, although Mainz tried everything.
