MSV Duisburg is not in the best financial situation at the moment. Nevertheless, the sale of matches is out of the question.
At the end of April, RevierSport reported that MSV Duisburg would have to raise a sum in the millions as part of the licensing process for the 2023/2024 season.
“It was clear to us that we would still have to do our homework to close the gap required by the conditions and provide evidence of funds in the lower seven-figure range by 7 June 2023,” emphasised managing director Thomas Wulf.
Coach Torsten Ziegner seems to be similarly relaxed about the current situation. Asked whether the financial situation was making squad planning difficult, the MSV coach replied: “I am sure that we will put together a team next season that will take the next step – and that is totally independent of the club’s financial situation. There are also appropriate people at work here who know exactly what they are doing.”
That current potential additions would have to wait is also not the case, as Ziegner reveals: “It is not our intention at all to stall the boys. The talks are going according to plan. As soon as something is fixed, we will announce it. “
The clubs would first have to exceed our pain threshold. We would first have to become weak. But that is not our intention. Regardless of the sum, we have no intention of selling these players. And we don’t have to, there are no requirements within the club because of the economic situation or anything like that.

Ziegner added: “The status quo is that we already have 20 of the current 28 players under contract. So it’s a big percentage of players that we have fixed. When we start training in the last week of June, we will definitely not have a short squad. It is also clear that the team will not be complete. Experience shows that something always changes in the course of preparation – in both directions. “
Keyword departures: the 45-year-old football coach does not believe at all that MSV might have to sell two of the best Zebras, who are tied to the Meiderich club until the summer of 2024 – Caspar Jander (20 years old, 27 games, one goal, four assists) and Julian Hettwer (19 years old, 22 games, five goals, two assists) – due to the lopsided financial situation.
“There is that possibility, but we are not worried about that. The clubs would first have to exceed our pain threshold. We would first have to become weak. But that is not our intention. Regardless of the amount, we have no intention of selling these players. We don’t have to, there are no requirements within the club due to the economic situation or anything like that. I assume that these guys will continue to play football for MSV Duisburg next season.”
