Sascha Mölders is leaving in the summer – here’s why

Sascha Mölders played in the Bundesliga as an active player. As a coach, he also wants to aim high. But things are currently not going according to plan in the Bayernliga.

As coach of TSV Landsberg, Sascha Mölders seemed to be well on his way to the Bayern regional league. Last season, the 38-year-old ex-professional and his TSV Landsberg only narrowly failed to beat SV Schleiding-Heining.

At the second attempt, TSV were to be promoted to the regional league. At the winter break, everything was going according to plan. However, Landsberg lost the lead in the table to TSV Schwaben Augsburg and are currently lagging behind. But it’s only three points – everything is still possible for Mölders’ charges.

And then this: As reported by the “Münchner Merkur” and the “tz”, the TSV managers are no longer satisfied with Mölders. According to the portal’s report, Landsberg wants to part ways with the 38-year-old after the current season.

But according to Mölders, this is not true. He emphasized to our editorial team on Tuesday, 5 March 2024: “That’s cheese, what’s in the media. The truth is that we decided together that we would go our separate ways in the summer. The reason is because I’m going to get my A license and I definitely want to coach in the regional league next season.”

In October 2023, the Essen native emphasized that he has big plans as a coach. Mölders told Forecasting: “I don’t want to look too far ahead. But: I have the B-Plus license in my pocket. I will soon be applying for the A license. If you get this, then you have something planned. Of course, I want to train as high as possible. It’s hard to say where that will be. You can’t plan that now.”

Sascha Mölders also played for Rot-Weiss Essen, MSV Duisburg and in the Bundesliga

Mölders played for Atletico Essen, Vogelheimer SV, Wacker Bergeborbeck, ETB Schwarz-Weiß Essen in his home town until he was 21 years old and played for Rot-Weiss Essen for two years in his senior career – after a stopover at MSV Duisburg. He scored an impressive 42 times in 52 regional league games and was top scorer in 2008/2009 with 28 goals.

The center forward even laced up his boots for TSV 1860 Munich for six years. From January 2016 to January 2022, he played 194 competitive matches and scored 76 goals. He also played 92 times (18 goals) in the 1st Bundesliga for FC Augsburg. His greatest successes were promotion to the 3rd division (2018) and the third division top scorer’s crown in the 2020/21 season (22 goals). At the age of 36, Mölders thus became the oldest top scorer in the 3rd division since it was founded.
