“Schalke belongs in the Bundesliga” – Mascarell suffers with S04

He was relegated with Schalke, he was relegated with FC Elche. Now Omar Mascarell has scored in his own goal – and could be relegated with Mallorca.

Omar Mascarell was relegated to the 2nd division with FC Schalke 04 in 2021. Now he is facing a similar fate in Spain’s top division for the second time – and he may even have contributed to it with an own goal. The match between relegation candidates Real Mallorca and FC Cádiz ended in a 1-1 draw on Sunday. Mascarell himself conceded the goal – and his employers Real Mallorca continue to tremble.

In the 59th minute, the former FC Schalke captain tried to clear a cross under pressure, but headed into his own goal to equalize the score at 1:1. Bitter – a win would probably have secured relegation early. However, with five games remaining and now six points ahead of Cádiz, the chances are still quite good.

Mascarell played for Eintracht Frankfurt and Schalke 04 in Germany from 2016 to 2021. At Schalke, the Spaniard was even promoted to captain under coach David Wagner when Alexander Nübel decided to leave the Royal Blues for Munich. “I learned a lot at Schalke,” the defensive midfielder recently said in an interview with Sky. “I’m grateful to have worn the captain’s armband for the club. Grateful for the positive moments.”

The fact that S04 is now fighting to stay in the basement instead of at the top of the second division table “makes me sad to see. I definitely suffer with them. Such a great club with such outstanding fans deserves better. I really hope they stay in the league now and return to the Bundesliga next season. Schalke simply belong in the Bundesliga! I really only wish them the best!”

After Schalke’s relegation in 2021, the now 31-year-old moved to FC Elche in Spain. There he suffered a similar fate to Schalke: he was relegated in his second season with Elche. And now? This season, he even reached the Spanish Cup final with his new club Real Mallorca (3:5 after a penalty shoot-out against Bilbao). In the league, however, the trembling continues
