Schalke goalkeeping icon has been sacked as coach

After just a round six months, an FC Schalke 04 goalkeeping icon has lost his coaching job at a Regionalliga-Südwest club.

At the end of May 2022, RevierSport reported that Oliver Reck had started a new coaching job. The former Bundesliga goalkeeper of SV Werder Bremen and FC Schalke 04 was introduced as coach of FC Rot-Weiss Koblenz.

Some six months later, it has to be said that the announcement from May 2022 is no longer up-to-date. Reck was relieved of his duties on 7 November 2022.

Koblenz parted ways with Reck two days after the goalless draw at promoted SGV Freiberg, where ex-RWE captain Marco Kehl-Gomez plays. “We have come to know Oliver Reck as a super coach and person, both professionally and in terms of character, and we would like to thank him for the work he has done since the summer. We would have liked to continue working with him, but after the results of the past weeks we had to make a decision. We hope that a new coach can now set new impulses,” explains sporting director Christian Noll. Reck’s successor is to be announced soon.

Rot-Weiss Koblenz are bottom of the table in the Regionalliga Südwest and have won only one game in 15 matches – against Kickers Offenbach (1:0) on matchday 3. In addition, there have been four draws. On the other hand, they have suffered ten defeats and have a goal difference of 9:30.

Born in Frankfurt, Reck spent around two and a half years at Jeddeloh before his stint in Koblenz. In 44 competitive games, he averaged 1.45 points per game. Previously, Reck worked for Kickers Offenbach, Fortuna Düsseldorf, MSV Duisburg and Schalke 04. At Schalke, Reck had worked as goalkeeper coach for six years until 2009 and was interim head coach in between. In Duisburg and Düsseldorf, too, Reck began as a specialist for the goalkeepers and in the course of time was appointed the coach with main responsibility.
