Schalke loan player’s coach resigns after training scuffle

At Dutch FC Utrecht, where Schalke’s Can Bozdogan plays on loan, the coach has resigned after a scuffle with former international Amin Younes.

This season Can Bozdogan of FC Schalke 04 is playing on loan for FC Utrecht. The 21-year-old midfielder has made eleven appearances and scored one goal so far. Whether he will return to Gelsenkirchen in the summer and fulfil his contract, which runs until 2024, is still open.

What is clear, however, is that Bozdogan will have a new coach. Henk Fraser, the previous head coach of the Dutch team, resigned after a training scandal.

The seventh-placed team in the Eredivisie spoke on Wednesday of “behaviour that went beyond the bounds of what was permitted” by the 56-year-old during a training session last Saturday. Media had reported a physical altercation with former German international Amin Younes (29) beforehand. Fraser allegedly choked the former Gladbach man for an as yet unknown reason.

“It’s never happened to me as a coach before. It doesn’t suit me and it doesn’t suit the club. I have damaged the club with this, it hurts many, including me,” Fraser wrote on the club’s website on Wednesday. “I do not recognise myself in my actions and would like to apologise to everyone involved. “

Eight-time international Younes, who only joined the Netherlands on loan from Saudi Arabia at the end of August, has yet to comment on the incident.

And for Bozdogan, Fraser’s resignation could also present an opportunity. In the last four games before the World Cup break, the youngster did not play a major role and only managed 20 minutes in total. It is possible that his playing time will increase again under his as yet unknown successor.
