Schalke miss penalties, BVB still lonely at the top

BVB is currently in a class of its own in the U19s. FC Schalke also had to realize that in the derby.

The derby in the U19 Bundesliga was on the agenda on Wednesday evening. FC Schalke, in second place, took on leaders Borussia Dortmund.

The gap before the match was already nine points, after the 90 minutes it is twelve points, BVB is lonely and alone at the top of the Junior Bundesliga.

Schalke coach Norbert Elgert promised before the match: “We’ll give it everything we’ve got – but that goes without saying. We do that against every opponent.”

But that wasn’t enough against BVB in a 2-1 (0-1) defeat. The derby thus played out like most of the recent duels – because: Dortmund have usually had the upper hand in recent years. Five of the last six championship encounters went to black and yellow.

The second leg of the semi-final for the 2022 German championship was the only match Schalke have won since 2020 (1-0) – albeit after a 5-1 defeat in the first leg.

On Wednesday, the first few minutes belonged to Schalke in front of 770 spectators, but BVB proved to be efficient. Zaid Amoussou scored early for Royal Blue, but his goal was disallowed for offside.

Paris Brunner then made it 1:0 for Dortmund. A scene that showed all his talent. It was the attacker’s 15th goal of the current U19 season.

BVB then showed their maturity, while Schalke countered with aggression. When Jean-Paul Ndiaye also missed a chance for the S04 talents, Schalke went into the break with a 0:1 lead

After the changeover, BVB had the first opportunity, but S04 had the best chance. But Tristan Osmani shot into the evening sky. That paid off shortly afterwards when it was Kjell Wätjen who supposedly put the lid on the derby by making it 2:0 for BVB.

Schalke did not give up, although the miners even missed a penalty. A foul on Bruno Numbisie resulted in a penalty, which Bilal Brusdeilins missed.

Shortly afterwards, substitute Edion Gashi reduced the deficit to 1:2 for Schalke. But despite Schalke’s best efforts, BVB were able to hold on for the 2:1 win. This was also due to a great save by BVB keeper Robin Lisewski in the 94th minute.

Schalke continue their campaign on Sunday (February 25, 11 a.m.) at SC Paderborn, while BVB face Arminia Bielefeld at the same time
