Schalke win in dramatic fashion – “I’m extremely disappointed by my players’ performance”

FC Schalke 04 secured their eighth straight win in the U19 Bundesliga West, but only managed to beat Wuppertaler SV 3:2 (1:2) in injury time.

Yet this 3-2 victory for FC Schalke 04 at Wuppertaler SV was anything but deserved for the visitors from Gelsenkirchen.

Norbert Elgert agreed with this assessment in the post-match interview. “If anyone stands for clear and honest words, it’s me. The team that deserved to win here is WSV,“ said the Schalke U19 coach, who had no intention of glossing over this late success.

”We had that bit of luck that Wuppertal lacked on our side at the end of extra time. I’m extremely disappointed with my players’ performance,” Elgert shook his head.

In fact, it was two penalties that got the visitors in royal blue back into the game in the first place, and the home side also lost an unnecessary red card against Tim Hilligloh themselves (58’+1′).

And yet Wuppertal never gave up. Elgert also noted this: “We knew that WSV is really good. We were prepared for anything. That’s why I’m all the more disappointed that my boys didn’t implement any of that here. The basic virtues that are important in football, even at youth level, were poorly developed by us this time,” said the long-standing Schalke coach, speaking plainly. ”That was just a very disappointing performance. There will be intensive analysis this week so that we can show against Viktoria Cologne next week that we have learned from this. Of course, none of the players will be nailed together by me,” joked Elgert, immediately turning the focus to the next task.

For Wuppertal SV, it was the second game without a win in their second game under Christian Britscho. Even though it was a more than annoying defeat against the miners. “Of course it was completely undeserved. We defended well for 97 minutes and even had a great chance to score the winning goal in injury time,” said the former Wattenscheid player, annoyed at the late setback in front of his home crowd at the Uellendahl. “But we’re only taking the positives away with us. We put in a really good performance, both in terms of fighting spirit and play,” Britscho agreed with his counterpart. However, without any tangible rewards.

Next week, WSV travel to Leverkusen (Sunday, November 5, 11 a.m., Ulrich-Haberland Stadium). With a similar performance to that against Schalke, the team from the Bergisches Land could well spring a surprise.
