The successful run of Spielvereinigung Schonnebeck in the Oberliga Niederrhein continues. Even the league leaders were defeated.
On the last day of April 2024, the Oberliga Niederrhein came to a summit meeting: Second-placed Spielvereinigung Schonnebeck hosted leaders Sportfreunde Baumberg.
And in the end, the runners-up from Essen came out on top with a 3:2 victory. The goals for Dirk Tönnies’ team were scored by Simon Skuppin, Calvin Küper and Lukas Korytowski. Günter Mabanza and Robin Hömig were successful for Baumberg. With four matchdays to go, Schonnebeck are six points behind Baumberg and can still become champions.
However, it is also a fact that neither Baumberg nor Schonnebeck will be relegated to the Regionalliga West. Both clubs decided not to apply for the necessary license.
From a sporting point of view, both teams would have deserved it. Schonnebeck are the team of the moment and have not lost in ten matches. Baumberg are still in first place, have scored the most goals and conceded the fewest.
But in the end, promotion will only go through KFC Uerdingen or Ratingen 04/19. Both clubs have applied for the Regionalliga. Unless – from KFC and RSV’s point of view – the super disaster happens and neither team finishes at least third in the table. In that case, no Lower Rhine Oberliga team would be promoted. In this case, one team less would be relegated from the Regionalliga West.
