Third division side SC Verl have reached the final of the Westphalia Cup. The favorites won 3:0 against SV Lippstadt.
3rd division against Regionalliga West – this comparison took place on Tuesday evening in the Sportclub Arena. Third-division side SC Verl faced regional league side SV Lippstadt at home in the Westphalia Cup semi-final.
Arminia Bielefeld, who prevailed against SC Preußen Münster in a dramatic penalty shoot-out, were the opponents in the final.
The second semi-final was not as dramatic, as SC Verl won 3:0 (0:0) as expected after 90 minutes and thus completed the third division final against Arminia Bielefeld.
In the first half, however, the game was initially tough for the favorites. Although Verl had a lot of possession, they were unable to find the necessary punch in attack. Lippstadt stood firm defensively and went into half-time with the score at 0-0. Shortly before the break, Verl’s Fabio Gruber had to be substituted with an injury and was replaced by Daniel Mikic
Head coach Alexander Ende’s team had to wait until the 60th minute to take the lead: After a cross from Michel Stöcker, Lippstadt’s Joep Munsters scored an own goal. Seven minutes later, SCV added to their lead through top scorer Lars Lokotsch. After a fine solo run, the striker scored with ice-cold precision into the far corner.
The third division team kept the pressure on and had the 3:0 on the foot several times. One of these chances was converted by substitute Maximilian Wolfram in the 86th minute to make it 3-0, and the home side progressed to the final in commanding fashion.
Both teams continue their league campaign with a home game. While SC Verl will face relegated second division side SV Sandhausen on Sunday (March 31, 4.30 p.m.), Lippstadt will face Wuppertaler SV in the Liebelt-Arena the day before (March 30, 2 p.m.) and hope to pick up important points in the relegation battle in the Regionalliga West.
