SGS Essen won the derby against MSV Duisburg in the women’s Bundesliga. The final score was 6:0.
On Sunday evening, two wishes came true for MSV Duisburg. 1902 spectators – in reference to the date of the club’s foundation – were supposed to attend the Bundesliga derby against SGS Essen in times of the currently booming women’s football. With just under 1000 spectators, however, the stands of the Duisburg Arena were rather sparsely filled. From a sporting point of view, things were no different, even the dream of victory over the neighbouring club turned into a real nightmare in the second half at the latest: the hosts lost the basement duel 0:6 (0:1), the Essen women cheered five times between the 71st and 81st minutes. “Now we can go into the winter break with a good feeling,” said Essen’s Vivien Endemann.
The 21-year-old had scored twice herself (68th/87th minute), Julia Debitzki (11th), Natasha Kowalski (71st), Ramona Maier (73rd) and Maria Edwards (81st) scored the other goals against the holey Duisburg defence. It looked so easy, but “I wouldn’t really call it easy”, said Natasha Kowalski. “We just took our chances effectively.”
But the last matchday before the winter break was a rather disappointing one for the women’s Bundesliga in terms of spectators. Not only in Duisburg was the crowd more manageable than hoped for, but also the top teams VfL Wolfsburg, Bayern Munich and Eintracht Frankfurt did not manage to reach the sometimes five-figure numbers that had been seen in the weeks after the European Championships in the summer.
Table leaders VfL Wolfsburg recorded their tenth win in their tenth match on Sunday in front of a crowd of just under 2000. The defending champions won 3-0 (2-0) against SV Meppen. The cup winners were not impressed by their rivals’ successes and maintained their five-point lead over FC Bayern München.
The Munich side had beaten Bayer Leverkusen 2-0 in front of 1950 spectators on Saturday. Eintracht Frankfurt beat bottom of the table Turbine Potsdam 3-0 on Friday, with just under 2,500 spectators watching the third-placed team win live on site.
