SGS Essen pulls the emergency brake – coach and sporting director leave after poor start

Last place and already two heavy defeats. This has led to consequences at women’s Bundesliga club SGS Essen.

SGS Essen is now a fixture in the women’s Bundesliga. But it is becoming more difficult to hold its own there with each passing season, as numerous professional clubs have now set up women’s teams and are striving to reach the top with them. In the current season, SGS got off to a classic false start under coach Robert Augustin, who succeeded Essen veteran Markus Högner. Five games, no wins, only one point: SGS is bottom of the table and, after losing 5-0 to Eintracht Frankfurt at the start of the season, recently had to digest a heavy 8-0 defeat to VfL Wolfsburg. The club has now responded to the misery by releasing Augustin and sporting director Thomas Gerstner. The club management came to this decision after a detailed analysis of the current situation. Augustin had been assistant coach at SGS since 2023 and had taken over as team manager for the current season. Gerstner had also started working for the club at the beginning of the season.

Until further notice, assistant coach Jessica Wissmann will lead the training sessions and will also be on the sidelines this Friday (October 10, 6:30 p.m.) when the team faces the tenth-placed team in Leipzig.

What will happen until the round of 16 in the DFB Cup is still open. The round of 16 will take place in November, with SGS traveling to Turbine Potsdam, currently eighth in the 2nd Women’s Bundesliga. The draw, conducted by Rudi Völler, produced the following pairings: Turbine Potsdam vs. SGS Essen 1. FC Union Berlin vs. FC Carl Zeiss Jena RB Leipzig vs. Werder Bremen VfL Wolfsburg – SC Freiburg

TSG Hoffenheim – Eintracht Frankfurt

Hamburger SV – Bayer Leverkusen

FC Ingolstadt 04 – Bayern Munich

SC Sand – 1. FC Cologne
