Coach Steffen Baumgart of Bundesliga football club 1. FC Köln has apologised for his verbal outburst during Sunday’s home match against FC Augsburg (3:2).
“The words that were spoken were not the fine English way,” said the coach, who is known for his emotions, on DAZN after the match. If he had offended anyone, the 50-year-old added, “I apologise”.
In the first half, the furious Baumgart had tangled with the Augsburg bench, shouting “Shut the fuck up!” among other things. Thanks to the outside microphones, this was also clearly audible to the TV viewers. “I often do that,” said Baumgart, “but I won’t be able to keep my emotions down, that’s just how it is. If it was too much for someone, then I’m sorry.”
The freak-out was triggered by a rude foul by FCA professional Ruben Vagas on Cologne’s Linton Maina in the first half. “When a whole bench jumps up at the foul and pretends it’s not a foul, then I have a problem with it,” Baumgart explained his behaviour.
