Six coach changes after 16 games – these clubs have already reacted

With around half the season played in the Regionalliga West, six coaches have already had to leave. Most recently Hüzeyfe Dogan in Wuppertal.

Most of the teams in the Regionalliga West have already played 16 games and six clubs have changed coaches.

Only Alemannia Aachen have had a major impact. Helge Hohl had to resign early in the season – on August 19, 2023. Reiner Plaßhenrich took over as interim coach for around a month before Heiner Backhaus arrived.

And he managed to overcome the crisis with Alemannia. Aachen is now in fourth place. Backhaus’ record: seven wins, two draws and one defeat. 23 points from ten games, a strong statistic!

In contrast, the change of coach at Rot Weiss Ahlen did not work out so well. Daniel Berlinski was the second coach to leave this season. Head of sport Cihan Özkara took over at Ahlen for 34 days before appointing a new coach in Björn Joppe. Under Joppe, Ahlen were at least able to record their second win of the season and leave the bottom of the table. However, the team is still relegated.

Boris Schommers accepted an offer from MSV Duisburg

Boris Schommers was not released by 1. FC Düren, but took the opportunity to move to the 3rd division. He is under contract with MSV Duisburg and is in 20th place in the third division table with the Zebras. This change of coach fizzled out early on. And for Schommers’ successor Carsten Wissing, things have not gone as smoothly in Düren – two wins, one draw, two defeats – as they did with head coach Schommers.

Farat Toku – one win, two defeats – also has room for improvement as head coach of SV Rödinghausen. The ex-Wattenscheider succeeded Carsten Rump in this position. Before the season, SVR was considered a hot contender for the top spots, but Toku now has to make sure that he and his team put enough distance between themselves and the bottom.

This also applies to Jens Langeneke – one win, one draw, two defeats – as the successor to long-serving Fortuna Düsseldorf II coach Nico Michaty, who took leave of absence on October 22, 2023 after more than five years as U23 coach of Fortuna Düsseldorf.

It remains to be seen whether the change of coach at Wuppertaler SV will pay off. The club is currently still looking for a successor to Hüzeyfe Dogan. For the time being, Christian Britscho, U19 coach, will get the team on track on an interim basis
