So much for “no sports” – when it came to sport, the Queen “had a royal time”.

The Queen and sport: Even as a young lady she had a soft spot for horse racing. The 21-year-old Princess Elisabeth enthusiastically followed the prestigious Epsom Derby, which was won by a certain Pearl Diver. Whether she also bet is not known. But horse racing was her great passion.

The “Royal Ascot” became a permanent fixture in her diary.

Lee Mottershead, author of the “Racing Post” recalls: “The Queen was heavily involved in horse racing, as a breeder and owner of racehorses and in some cases as an owner of racecourses. Ascot racecourse, in fact, belongs to the Crown. But ultimately she was a racing fan first and foremost. She loved the sport, and through her position she was also heavily involved in it. “

Even in football the Queen was never offside

But her Majesty also enjoyed kicking bipeds. In 1968, she met the football legend Pélé at the Maracana Stadium in Rio de Janeiro. Pélé wrote these days with admiration: “Their deeds have left their mark on generations. This legacy will remain forever. “

Two years earlier, on 30 July 1966, the Queen presented captain Bobby Moore with the World Cup trophy at London’s Wembley Stadium – the “Three Lions” only title to date, following a 4-2 victory over Germany. Incidentally, Her Majesty has never commented on the legendary “Wembley goal” – whether it was one or not.

Even the animals say goodbye

One of her favourite animals, Carltonlima Emma, a black fur pony also stands at the side of the procession as the coffin makes its way through the gates of Windsor Castle. Two of her corgis have also been seen briefly outside the entrance. In her lifetime she is said to have owned around 50 of these dogs.

The worldwide sympathy following the Queen’s death is close to the royal’s heart.
King Charles III sent word through Buckingham Palace:

Over the past ten days, my wife and I have been deeply touched by the many messages of condolence and support we have received from this country and around the world. In London, Edinburgh, Hillsborough and Cardiff, we have been touched beyond measure by all who have taken the trouble to come and pay tribute to the lifelong commitment of my dear mother, the late Queen. As we all prepare to say goodbye, I would like to take this opportunity to thank all the countless people who have been so supportive and comforting to my family and me during this time of grief.

Mourning procession moves towards Windsor – what we know about the ceremony there

The service, which will be held at St George’s Chapel at Windsor Castle at around 5pm, was planned well in advance by the Queen herself. It is said that the music to be heard there is by Sir William Harris – an organist from whom Elizabeth II is said to have learned to play the piano.

What happens next?

From Wellington Arch, the Queen’s coffin is in a vehicle on its way to Windsor. There will be another funeral procession outside the castle, but the coffin will remain in the glass vehicle.

There will be another service there at 5pm German time (4pm in Windsor). With around 800 guests, fewer people are expected there than at the ceremony in the morning. In the early evening, the Queen will be buried with her family next to her husband Philip, who died last year.

Remember the pictures of Prince Louis on the balcony during the Crown Jubilee? With his cheeky grins, he caused a lot of smiles. At his great-grandmother’s funeral, however, the 4-year-old is absent. According to his mother Kate in the British media, he is very concerned about the death of Elizabeth II and has asked many questions.

Prince George and Princess Charlotte were seen alongside their parents at Westminster Abbey and later in a vehicle with Queen Camilla and mother Catherine, Princess of Wales.
