Rot-Weiß Oberhausen had their guts ripped out on the 25th matchday of the Regionalliga West. The Cloverleafs were held to a 1-1 draw against Rot Weiss Ahlen.
SC Rot-Weiß Oberhausen’s season is as good as over in terms of the table. The gap to the leaders of the Regionalliga West, Alemannia Aachen, was already 16 points before the game against Rot Weiss Ahlen. The dream of promotion had long since become a utopian dream.
The Cloverleafs had the game under control for a long time against Ahlen, but ultimately got in their own way again. RWO were held to a 1-1 draw at their home stadium in Niederrhein and remained winless for the third time in a row.
Rot-Weiß Oberhausen set the tone right from the start. The home side did not really create any goalscoring opportunities at first. In the 17th minute, the cloverleaf fans already had the goal on their lips. Moritz Montag’s shot was just scraped off the line. However, he did better a little later with a header and took a deserved lead (29′).
“We did really well in the first half, unless I don’t know anything about soccer. We could probably have led 2-0 and then I don’t think Ahlen would have come back here again,” said Mike Terranova about the first half.
However, the visitors’ solid defense repeatedly drove RWO to despair. Captain Sven Kreyer agreed: “It wasn’t easy because Ahlen were very compact with their back five and two sixes in front of them. We tried very hard, but didn’t have the clear-cut chances to score and then took the lead through a set-piece. We thought that might play into our hands, as Ahlen would then have to come back. “
I think we need to win another crappy game like this to get back on track.

Ahlen then came out and showed much more confidence. The game developed into a much more open affair than in the first half. The visitors scored the equalizer with their first real shot on goal through Coleman and thus also the 1:1 final score (74′).
A more than just a sobering result for the Cloverleafs. Terranova assesses the emotional state of the Oberhausen side: “It’s a really disappointing phase for us. I think we need to win another crappy game like this to get back on track. The team is good. The only thing that’s not right at the moment are the results and we’ll continue to do everything we can to change that.”
The captain found somewhat clearer words than the coach did at the press conference, without losing his sense of humor: “We have to get our act together as quickly as possible, because that’s not enough in all areas. But we say that every Saturday. Maybe we should play on Fridays or Sundays (laughs). “
