Shkodran Mustafi does not currently have a club, but would like to continue playing professional soccer. The 2014 world champion already has plans for after his career.
Soccer world champion Shkodran Mustafi wants to get his coaching license after his time as a professional. The 31-year-old, who is currently without a club, announced this in an interview published on Saturday by pay-TV channel Sky.
It remains to be seen whether the defender will find a new club. Mustafi last played for Spanish second division club UD Levante, where his contract expired at the end of last season.
“I had to have another operation on my heel after I played completely with pain towards the end of last season in Spain,” said Mustafi, who was part of the German World Cup-winning team in Brazil in 2014. After the operation and rehab measures, he is keeping fit and hoping for a chance to play professional soccer again.
It’s not so easy when you have to train alone, admitted the former Arsenal and Schalke professional. “The longer you don’t have a club, the more difficult it becomes, I’m aware of that. I have a few ideas in case I don’t sign for a club, but I haven’t set myself any deadlines.”
Mustafi will be covering the European Championship finals in Germany next year as a pundit for MagentaTV. Working in television is a cool experience, he says. “You always get to know new people, new ideas and philosophies. I have one thing in the back of my mind: I definitely want to get my coaching license,” he explained, but also said: “I see it as a big problem that the coaches’ heads always roll first. That’s the only thing that puts me off in terms of my plans to work as a coach. “
