Spain destroy England’s title dream and are crowned European champions for the fourth time. A Spanish player also sets a record
Spain are the European soccer champions. The national team coached by Luis de la Fuente defeated England 2:1 (0:0) in the final. Nico Williams in the 47th minute and Mikel Oyarzabal (86th) scored the goals for the Furia Roja in Berlin’s Olympic Stadium. Spain thus secured the continental title for the fourth time and lead the list of winners ahead of Germany, who have won the European Championship three times. Cole Palmer only managed to equalize for England in the 73rd minute
In the quarter-finals, Spain had knocked the DFB team out of the tournament. The Iberians had entered the final as the most convincing team of the tournament.
After an uneventful first half, Williams put the Spaniards ahead with their first real chance on goal. Lamine Yamal had provided the assist. The 17-year-old is the youngest player ever to appear in a European Championship final. Even after taking the lead, the Spaniards created more scoring chances
England, led by Bayern striker Harry Kane and Champions League winner Jude Bellingham, who was substituted after an hour, did not have much to offer in attack for a long time. Nevertheless, a long-range shot from Joker Palmer made it 1-1. Oyarzabal, who also came on as a substitute, then scored for Spain to make it 2-1.
Coach Gareth Southgate’s Three Lions still have to wait for their first title since 1966. Victory at the World Cup on home soil remains the self-proclaimed motherland of soccer’s only triumph at a major tournament.
