Special contract model – perennial unlucky player returns to home club

He never had any luck at Borussia Dortmund, now he is returning to his Spanish homeland to RDC Mallorca. We’re talking about Mateu Morey

Mateu Jaume Morey has joined RCD Mallorca from Borussia Dortmund on a free transfer, the Spanish club announced on Friday. The 24-year-old is thus returning to his home and training club nine years after joining FC Barcelona’s youth ranks.

His departure from BVB had already been clear since May and his expiring contract was not extended. “He had a lot of bad luck with injuries and was never able to show what he was made of over a longer period of time,” said sporting director Sebastian Kehl at the time.

The right-back only played 32 competitive matches in four years at BVB and was plagued by countless injuries – the biggest of which resulted in a period of 1015 days without a competitive match. In May 2021, Morey tore almost all the ligaments in his knee during the DFB Cup semi-final against Holstein Kiel, followed by countless operations and setbacks

On February 9, 2024, he finally made his comeback in the 88th minute of the 3-0 win against SC Freiburg. Coach Edin Terzic called him a “hero” and explained: “It was an extremely long journey from the hospital to the training pitch and then to here. I’m incredibly proud of him – and of having such a character in the team.”

Two more appearances and an emotional farewell for the crowd favorite followed before the end of the season. “I would like to thank everyone at BVB, all the fans and all the staff for these five years. Everyone has always stood by my side. I will always be grateful for that,” said Morey

The many injuries are also the reason why RDC Mallorca is securing Morey’s return. The Mallorca native will only receive a contract for the upcoming 2024/2025 season – albeit with a mutual option to extend for a further two seasons.

Morey now wants to finally fulfill his potential in Mallorca and play his way into coach Jagoba Arrasate’s team. If he survives the preparations starting on Monday unscathed, a real treat awaits him in the La Liga opener. RDC Mallorca will then host Real Madrid
