Out in the Westfalenpokal for Sportfreunde Siegen. In the second round, the upper league team disgraced itself at the hands of a district league team.
After the second round of the Westphalia Cup, it’s all over for Sportfreunde Siegen. On Wednesday evening, the first division team lost 1:2 at the district league team TuS Heven and was eliminated from the competition. And according to the course of the game, it was not even close: The outsiders from Witten were already 2:0 ahead at the break after a double strike by Marcel Herrmann (34th, 37th). The eight-league team defended its lead until stoppage time. Only then did Siegen score the final goal through Tobias Filipzik (90.+1) – much too late.
In the second match on Wednesday evening, the club from the higher division prevailed. FC Gütersloh beat Oberliga relegated Holzwickede SC 2-1. After a goalless first half, Ilias Illig (54th) and Markus Esko (65th) scored for the Gütersloh team, which had a weak start in the league. Holzwickede made it exciting again in the final minutes, Michele Teofilo (88th) was successful.
RSV Meinerzhagen had already opened the second round last week with a 3:0 victory over Teuto Riesenbeck. The other second-round matches will take place in the next two weeks.
The Siegen team’s elimination was the first big surprise of this year’s edition. For the Sportfreunde, it is the second setback within a few days. They had actually started promisingly with a 3:0 win against ASC Dortmund. But then they lost 0:3 against SV Schermbeck at the weekend – and now the cup defeat.
“That was a bitter pill to swallow, just like the game against Schermbeck. We set up the opponent well, had a great chance to make it 1:0. In that scene, we just didn’t have any luck in the game,” coach Lirian Gerguri summed up to club media. “Then we don’t act cleverly at one stage. The opponents lurked for switching moments, and they did a great job. After 0:2, it becomes extremely difficult.”
The coach was self-critical: “We fail because the performance is not good enough. But I would like to put myself in front of the team and protect them. It’s my job to get them on track.”
The Oberliga continues on Sunday, with Preußen Münster’s U23 visiting the Leimbachstadion. “That will be a different game,” said Gerguri. It is now a matter of reflecting on the defeat against Heven – without analysing the game “in a broken way. We need a clear head. “
