The Sportfreunde Siegen have secured their place in the Oberliga Westfalen. With a 5:2 victory over TuS Bövinghausen, the Siegen team left no questions unanswered.
On the last matchday of the Oberliga Westfalen, Sportfreunde Siegen won 5:2 against TuS Bövinghausen. Siegen thus secured their place in the league on their own merits, while Bövinghausen ended a disappointing second half of the season with another setback.
Even though Sportfreunde Siegen started the game well, the visitors fell behind early on through a Christian Silaj lob (3rd). But the Sportfreunde did not let themselves be put off by this and were rewarded with an equaliser through a goal by Leon Pursian (36th). But in the direct countermove, Dino Dzaferoski (38th) shone with a solo and put Bövinghausen back in the lead.
In the second half, Siegen really turned up the heat and turned the game around. First Arda Nebi (58th) scored from the spot, then Till Hilchenbach (60th) gave the visitors the lead with a header. Shortly before the end, Leon Pursian (86th) and Michel Harrer (93rd) increased the score to 5:2.
Patrick Helmes, coach of Sportfreunde Siegen, was overjoyed after the game: “We have already seen at the weekend in the Bundesliga that it is not over until the whistle blows. In the first half, we didn’t take advantage of our opportunities and went behind unnecessarily. But then the boys played a very clean half and deserved to win.”
Without the win against Bövinghausen, Siegen would indeed have been relegated, due to the victories of TuS Erndtebrück and TSG Sprockhövel. Accordingly, the game was also nerve-wracking for the coach: “I’m nice and tired, it was an exhausting second half of the season. We were never really able to field the same team. In the end, the final is a symbol of the whole season, we were chasing a deficit and then managed to do it on our own. “
The Siegen team received strong support from more than 500 fans who travelled with them. “That is our great luck. It was already a home game here in Dortmund, it was a great atmosphere and that’s what makes winning so special,” said a delighted Helmes. The supporters celebrated together with the players long after the final whistle.
Bövinghausen disappointed in second half
For Bövinghausen, a disappointing second half of the season has come to an end. TuS captain Maurice Haar found clear words: “I don’t want to be too brash, but some people should ask themselves how much they want something in the future. Congratulations to Siegen, but we must not sell ourselves like that in the second half.”
Haar was not only disappointed by the clear result: “We folded, the will was no longer there. I have no idea why. It was a bad end to a bad season, or rather a bad second half. “
