The political Ash Wednesday was also heard in Erkenschwick. Here, there was now an invitation to the CSU leader.
On Ash Wednesday, Forecasting reported on the speech by CSU leader Markus Söder, who was particularly critical of the traffic light coalition.
We didn’t want to venture into political territory, but we recorded the speech because it also mentioned the regional league team Wuppertaler SV and the Westphalia Oberliga team SpVgg Erkenschwick.
The reason for this was that Söder also countered a statement by German Chancellor Olaf Scholz, who claimed that his “traffic light” coalition government was the best government of all time. And here he left his beloved Bavaria for once and used the football in North Rhine-Westphalia to make his point.
Söder shouted into the hall in response to Scholz’s statement: “It’s as if the president of Wuppertaler SV or Spielvereinigung Erkenschwick thought he was playing in the Champions League!”
The Erkenschwick team took to Facebook to share the story of this national publicity and invited Söder to the Ruhr area for a currywurst. “Of course we’ll be playing in the Champions League soon!” Dear Mr. Markus Söder, We warmly invite you to come and see the great quality of football we play here at Stimberg. We will be happy to welcome you to our beautiful city with a delicious currywurst and the finest Pilsner.”
The next opportunity would be on Sunday, when Erkenschwick are due to play SG Finnentrop-Bamenohl in the Westphalia Oberliga at 3:30 pm.
We also like it very much in the Oberliga, where football is still played honestly
Spielvereinigung Erkenschwick
Before leaving, the club made a plea for the fifth division: “And by the way: of course we will play in the Champions League someday! But we also like it in the Oberliga, where people still play honest football. We look forward to your visit and send sporting greetings from the Ruhr area.”
We are curious to see whether the CSU boss will accept the invitation. Because one thing is clear: as a meat fan, he will be happy to eat a currywurst. At the political Ash Wednesday event in Passau, he emphasized: “Roast pork, Schäufele, Leberkäs, Weißwurst and, of course, Nuremberg bratwurst have a quasi-constitutional status in Bavaria and are therefore protected!”
