Start made to measure – VfL Bochum celebrates clear opening victory

The women of VfL Bochum have celebrated a successful start to the new regional league season. They defeated SSV Rhade by a clear margin.

After finishing as runners-up in the previous season, the women of VfL Bochum want to have a say in the title fight in the Regionalliga West again in the new season.

They have certainly made a good start. The Bochum women celebrated a perfect start on Thursday evening, winning 4-0 against league newcomers SSV Rhade. It was the opening match of the 2023/24 season.

Dörthe Hoppius laid the foundation for the victory with a brace in the first half (12th, 41st). After the restart, the VfL striker added her third goal (58th) before Nina Lange scored the final goal (75th).

Bochum’s next match will be the Sunday after next. The Revierklub will then host the second team of FSV Gütersloh. And the following week, a derby premiere will take place: In the second round of the DFB Cup, Bundesliga side SGS Essen will come to Castroper Straße. Both teams have never met in a competitive match before.

“Of course we had hoped for a regional league team like in the first round. The fact that it’s now directly against a first division team naturally presents us with a special challenge. The roles are clearly distributed,” coach Kyra Malinowski told club media after the draw. “But it’s very nice that we’re meeting SGS Essen in the derby. We hope for a super crowd again. “
