State Cup – 1860 Munich is out, Rostock and Cottbus advance

On Saturday, November 16, 2024, several third division teams were in action in the State Cup. In a third division duel, 1860 Munich came up short.

TSV 1860 Munich is out of the Bavarian Cup! In the quarterfinals, they suffered a 1-3 defeat against SpVgg Unterhaching at Giesings Höhen.

The first goal was the beginning of the end. A free kick from Johannes Geis slipped through the hands of 1860 keeper René Vollath (31). In the second half, Julian Kügel (61) and Max Lamby (78) scored before Jesper Verlaat was able to make the result look a little better in the third minute of stoppage time.

Lions coach Argirios Giannikis complained that his team never really got into the game: “When spaces opened up, we were too sluggish. There were no chances for either side in the first half.”

Had it not been for the avoidable free kick that led to the deficit, Giannikis said, “René Vollath was probably too confident, his mind was already on the next thing,” the 44-year-old searched for explanations. “Of course, the pressure increased after the goal. At the end of the day, we didn’t manage to create any openings with quick play. That’s why Haching deserved to win today.”

Haching coach Marc Unterberger, who has not won a single game in the last ten third division matches, said: “The first half was very even with no chances on either side. The 1-0 was the opener for us. Compliments to the team for how they handled the lead. We defended everything. The game could have ended differently if Sechzig had scored the first goal. I’m glad I know what it feels like to win again.”

Energie Cottbus advances to the cup quarterfinals without shining

Energie Cottbus advanced to the round of 16 of the Brandenburg State Cup with some difficulty. Coach Claus-Dieter Wollitz’s team beat sixth-division Oranienburger FC Eintracht 2-0 (1-0). Midfielder Jonas Hofmann scored both goals (8th and 82nd minutes).

“We achieved our goal of reaching the next round,” said match winner Hofmann. “The opponents made it very difficult for us on a small pitch and we didn’t play in the right spaces. We achieved our goal, but we need to analyze how we can find the right solutions against opponents like this.”

Captain Axel Borgmann did not want to overestimate the performance: “We found it harder than we wanted to. But everyone came through unscathed and we’re through to the next round. We want to win the cup, no one cares how we got there.”

Rostock reaches quarterfinals and stays on the Baltic Sea for the winter

FC Hansa Rostock is in the quarterfinals of the Mecklenburg-Vorpommern State Cup. Thanks to a 2-0 (1-0) victory over Verbandsliga representatives SpVgg Torgelow-Ueckermünde, Daniel Brinkmann’s team advanced to the last eight. Christian Kinsombi and Sigurd Haugen scored the goals for the Hanseatic side on Saturday afternoon (November 16, 2024).

Rostock will complete its preparations for the 2024/2025 season at home rather than in the warm south. In consultation with the coaching team, the sporting management has decided to forego a winter training camp abroad this season.
