Nine years ago, Moritz Stoppelkamp scored a goal – probably for eternity. Time to remember.
It’s 20 September 2014, a Saturday that Moritz Stoppelkamp will never forget. It is around 5:20 pm when his moment for eternity lines up.
Hannover 96 press for the equaliser at SC Paderborn, then a sensational promoted team in the Bundesliga, with the score at 0:1. There is a free kick for the 96ers in the 90th minute, all players move up.
But Paderborn can clear with a header, the ball flies to Stoppelkamp, who lets the ball drip off his chest 82 metres in front of the opponent’s goal, turns around to his left and shoots the ball on goal.
And every attempt to clear the ball was in vain, even goalkeeper Ron-Robert Zieler, who had rushed forward, could not intervene. It took a few seconds, then the ball was in the goal.
2:0 Paderborn, Stoppelkamp’s sensational goal puts the promoted team at the top of the Bundesliga because of the more goals scored compared to Mainz 05.
What a start for coach André Breitenreiter’s team. What a scene for the former Rot-Weiss Essen and Rot-Weiß Oberhausen player, who was still dubbed Stolperkamp at RWO and now scored the goal of the year. Even if it was only enough for second place in the official vote.
