The Judo World Championships in Doha entered the third day, which once again offered some explosive and spectacular fights. The spectators were also in for a big surprise.
On Tuesday, part 3 of the Judo World Championships in Doha was on the agenda. The world champion of 2019, Christa Deguchi from Canada, showed herself in top form today and easily entered the final in the 57 kg category. There, Japan’s Haruka Funakubo, who for her part showed impressive fights in Doha, was waiting.
But Deguchi and her experience were no match for her. The Canadian showed beautiful judo and won her second world title overall after 2019.

Stump provides the sensation
A very special achievement, the lucky winner thought so too: “You have to trust yourself more than anyone else,” said Christa Deguchi after the fight, “then you can do what you want to do.”
Manuel Lombardo from Italy had his sights firmly set on the gold medal in the 73 kg category, clearing all his opponents up to the final.
There he faced Nils Stump from Switzerland, who showed great determination throughout the tournament. Fantastic throws, such as against Soichi Hashimoto from Japan, brought him into his first ever World Cup final.
And there the Swiss dominated in an epic fight. In the golden score, Lombardo was initially sure he had won. But the referee’s check showed that he had executed a header, and this is not allowed in judo. Thus Nils Stump became the first Judo World Champion from Switzerland – a truly historic moment.
Stump stated that he was at a loss for words, it was a great success for Swiss judo, “I am just happy that I was able to take home this medal for Switzerland”.
