Third-division club Rot-Weiss Essen is back in fourth place! On Saturday, RWE beat top-of-the-league SSV Jahn Regensburg 3:1 (1:0).
At the end of the English week, Rot-Weiss Essen traveled to Bavaria for the second time in a row to face league leaders SSV Jahn Regensburg. After four away defeats in a row, the Essen team was determined to turn the tables.
No sooner said than done: RWE celebrated a 3-1 away win at the league leaders and were finally able to celebrate a win away from home again with the more than 800 fans who had traveled with them.
Elias Huth (15th minute) with an own goal, Cedric Harenbrock (59th minute) and Marvin Obuz (66th minute) were the scorers for the effective and passionate visitors. Noah Ganaus’s Regensburg goal (84th minute) came too late and could no longer prevent Essen’s fourth away win of the season.
After the game, fans and players celebrated the surprise coup for several minutes. “One day, one day, one day it will happen and then we’ll go to Rostock to see the RWE,” the away section sang at the top of their voices. RWE head coach Christoph Dabrowski was also celebrated with chants as he walked to the “Magenta” interview from the main stand.
That feels really good. At this point, I have to emphasize that we have 42 points after 25 games. We only had as many points as that after 38 games last year. In my opinion, this is a huge achievement by the team at the moment. A huge compliment for that.
Christoph Dabrowski.
The coach, who had to do without three key players Jakob Golz, Lucas Brumme and captain Vinko Sapina, was understandably happy: “That’s really great. I have to stress at this point that we have 42 points after 25 games. We had as many points as that after 38 games last year. In my opinion, this is a huge achievement by the team at the moment. A huge compliment for that. Not many teams have managed to go to the league leaders and take three points. We can be proud of that.”
In contrast to the last away games, RWE didn’t go all out for possession, but concentrated on a stable defensive performance and good counterattacks – with success. “That’s true. We had space and could have even scored more goals. But we don’t want to complain, because we scored three goals against a team that defends very aggressively and only concedes a few goals,” said the pleased Essen-based football coach.
Next week (February 17, 2:00 p.m.), RWE will face the next top game when third-place SSV Ulm 1846 visits Hafenstraße. Seven days later (February 24, 2:00 p.m.), Essen will then play at Dynamo Dresden, so it’s back-to-back.
“It’s a super exciting challenge to compete against the best. Both in Regensburg, but also next week and the week after. But the next game is the most important game for us,” Dabrowski looks ahead.
