High effort, little return: The SG Wattenscheid simply cannot reward themselves in the Regionalliga West. Captain Schurig wants to get the next points.
After seven games in the Regionalliga West, it is clear: The SG Wattenscheid 09 is in penultimate place in the table with four points and has had to pay a lot of dues so far. At the beginning of the season, the SGW suffered heavy defeats against the heavyweights of the league, but now they are on a par with the competition. It is all the more bitter when these duels are decided by nuances in favour of the opponents.
Due to the noticeable difference in quality compared to many of this year’s league participants, the Wattenscheid team will have to go above and beyond in every game and keep their opponents busy for more than 90 minutes in order to take home anything worthwhile. Otherwise, as coach Christian Britscho rightly said, it will be “difficult” in the league.
Gegen Aachen: Troubleshooting after change of sides
Captain Marvin Schurig praised his team for their ability to learn within the game after the 2-1 defeat to Alemannia Aachen. “We missed a few things in the first half that we implemented better afterwards. The distances between the opponents and us were far too big, so the opponent always had the opportunity to get open and run towards our chain.”
After the talk in the dressing room, the problems mentioned were remedied. The SGW was “tighter, more gripping and more verbal”, as the defensive man analysed. That was crucial “to lead and win the important duels. Schurig wants to build on this performance and not just show his grip later in the game: “It was very good for long stretches, as the coach also confirmed to us. We have to take what went well over the full distance. “
Schurig: “We know we can do it “
And the tasks for the traditional club will not get any easier in the coming weeks: First of all, the second round of the Westphalia Cup will be a big challenge for the SGW when they play regional league leaders Preußen Münster (Wednesday, 7 September, 7 p.m.), where they already dropped three points at the start of the season.
In the league, Britscho’s team then plays host to Borussia Mönchengladbach’s U23 four days later before facing SV Straelen in the basement duel the following week. Captain Schurig is optimistic about the matches and demands the attitude mentioned at the beginning of this article in order to be able to collect important points: “We have to go full throttle. We know that we can do it. That just has to get into our heads. “
