Tears rolling: Poland’s goalkeeper comforts his son after World Cup defeat

After Poland’s defeat to France in the last 16 of the World Cup in Qatar, the cameras caught a particularly emotional moment.

On it, Poland goalkeeper Wojciech Szczesny kneels off the pitch in front of his most loyal fan: son Liam. The footballer can be seen whispering in the 4-year-old’s ear, drying his tears and holding him tightly in his arms.

“It ends prematurely for us, but with our heads held high,” the national player’s wife wrote on Instagram. One day, says Marina Łuczenko-Szczesny, who is known in Poland as a singer and actress, she wishes her son would also stand in the goal and defend for Poland.

Users on social networks found the footage particularly moving. Wojciech Szczesny himself posted a photo of himself carrying his son through the stadium’s catacombs.

“Thank you to all the fans for your support […]. To those in the stadium, those behind the TV, but especially to my girlfriend and our son, who understood today that it is possible to lose with pride and honour,” the Juventus goalkeeper commented.
