Terrence Boyd on BVB return and relegation battle with Mannheim

Terrence Boyd celebrated an important last-minute win with Waldhof Mannheim at his former club Borussia Dortmund II on Saturday. We spoke to him.

When Terrence Boyd joined BVB’s U23s in 2011 at the age of 20, he was still at the very beginning of his career. Now 33, he returned to the Stadion Rote Erde for the first time with Waldhof Mannheim – and celebrated a last-second 2-1 win against BVB.

Forecasting spoke to the former US international afterwards. Terrence Boyd about:

… the last-minute win: it’s hard to describe what we went through in the last five minutes, first with the equalizer, then with the goal in the 94th minute. I don’t know where you go through such a rollercoaster ride of emotions in your private life outside of soccer. That’s what you do it all for. I’m relieved and proud.

… the importance of the three points in the relegation battle: A few BVB lads told me after the game that they wouldn’t begrudge us the win. Because they’re relatively safe and we’re fighting for survival so that the whole club doesn’t go under. That was a message to ourselves. We rightly want to stay in the league. And you can just see that what the coaching staff wants from us is taking effect. It’s simply a matter of you, as a club, taking the points now

.. the return to BVB: The last time I was here, I was actually still a Borussia Dortmund player. But we didn’t have a “carpet” (pitch, the ed.) like today. It was almost 15 years ago, but I still saw a few old faces. That was very nice.

… his career after his 2011/2012 season at Borussia Dortmund: “When you think about everything I’ve experienced since then, it’s amazing. I don’t know if it would have been the same if I had stayed at BVB. I think I would have got a professional contract if I hadn’t moved to Rapid Vienna in Austria. But then I would have played in the 3rd division. Because at that moment – it was the second championship year – Robert Lewandowski was there and they had brought in Julian Schieber from VfB Stuttgart. That’s why I thought: “What am I still doing here?” I would hardly have gotten any playing time in the Bundesliga and in Austria I was allowed to play in the Europa League for two years and was able to learn a lot. I later became an international and was allowed to play in the 2nd division.
