That’s why Dabrowski has “very good memories” of MSV Duisburg

With Rot-Weiss Essen, coach Christoph Dabrowski faces MSV Duisburg. An opponent the coach has good memories of from his playing days.

For Rot-Weiss Essen coach Christoph Dabrowski, the derby at MSV Duisburg on Friday evening is a premiere: For the first time in his coaching career, he is a guest at the Zebras’ stadium.

As a player, however, Dabrowski was on the field against MSV a few times – and gained mostly positive experience. The 44-year-old made seven appearances on the Wedau and faced Duisburg 13 times in the jerseys of Werder Bremen, Hannover 96, Arminia Bielefeld and VfL Bochum. Dabrowski only conceded three defeats against the Meiderich side. And three times it was the former midfielder himself who scored a decisive goal to win the game. Most recently in a 1-0 win on a Friday evening in December 2010.

For RWE coach Dabrowski, the “here and now” is more important

“I actually have very good memories of the games against MSV,” said Dabrowski in the media round before the upcoming duel with RWE in Duisburg. The coach could get the team fired up with a few anecdotes from back then. Couldn’t he? “I’m not the type of coach who stands in front of the team every day and reminisces,” explained Dabrowski. More important for him: “Being in the here and now and working things out to deliver a successful game.”

That’s what the Essen team has been trying to do since the opening defeat against SV Elversberg – first with a short training camp in Sweden that had been planned for some time, then with a test match against Oberliga side Spvg. Schonnebeck (4:1). And, of course, on the training pitch. Dabrowski agreed with the impressions gathered and emphasised: “I think every player has the ambition to bring his best performance onto the pitch on Friday. “
