That’s why fewer fans than expected are traveling to Dresden

Rot-Weiss Essen faces an explosive away game at Dynamo Dresden. Many RWE fans prefer to watch another match in eastern Germany.

When traditional clubs Dynamo Dresden and Rot-Weiss Essen meet, the police are in for a busy day anyway.

To make matters worse, two major events are taking place in Saxony’s capital this Sunday. Parallel to the third division match at the Rudolf-Harbig-Stadion (1:30 p.m., MDR), a Pegida demonstration is taking place in Dresden. However, according to police spokesman Lukas Reumund, speaking to Bild, sufficient police officers are available and scheduled for the match between Dresden and RWE, which has been classified as a “high-risk game.”

New service dogs will also be deployed to maintain order. “This is a Category 1 game, so we have more officers on duty,” said Reumund.

The rush from Essen is not as great as it was for the last games in Dresden, when over 2,000 Essen fans traveled to the stadium. 2,534 tickets were made available to Rot-Weiss Essen fans, but only just under 1,000 tickets were sold in advance. Spontaneous away fans will still be able to purchase tickets at the stadium box office on Sunday.

Rot-Weiss Essen in Rostock: Special train already sold out

An important reason for the lower demand from Essen fans is the tight schedule. After Wednesday’s home game against SC Verl, the next long away trip awaits the Red and Whites on Saturday (2 p.m.). Then it’s off to the east again, to Hansa Rostock.

More than 2,000 of the 2,600 tickets available for the match against the second division relegation team have already been sold. The fan and sponsorship department has planned a special train, which sold out in record time. 700 seats were sold within 70 minutes.

RWE: Sunday date inconvenient for fans

Two expensive away trips within just six days are not feasible for every RWE fan who likes to travel. Hansa Rostock also has the advantage of a more fan-friendly date on Saturday. Dresden is Rot-Weiss Essen’s second long away game on a Sunday after Unterhaching. For working fans, a late return on Sunday evening is an additional reason to watch the game at home on TV.
